G'day powderburns,
I wasn't aware that the Golden Point battery was so well preserved! It must be the only battery in New Zealand I have not yet visited. Next time I'm down that way I must have a close look at it. Thanks for posting the pictures.
Regards, Rob (RKC)

Gday Rob, It's a great slice of gold mining history, most authentic. These old girls don’t like being parked up for months at a time. A bearing caught and started to fail on the motor. But not before one of the stamp heads came loose, ending the fun. It was a moment when it first kicked in: the shed filled with motor fumes, the massive pulleys started spinning and belts flapping inches from your head, and then it started it’s catchy syncopated beat. This screen ain’t 400 mesh. More like 12 mesh. The stamps create mud from quartz which squirts out from under the stamps then flows over the shiny copper backed mercury plates: i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu286/powderburns/Gold/GoldenPoint%20Battery/2009-11-2611-31-06_0010MercuryTable.jpgCheers, Matt
