Hi All,
Just been watching footage of guys professionally exploring a lot of the old mines in Victoria. Got me wondering, has anyone explored any of the mines in our backyard? Is there any footage out there?

G'day simon, I've seen some very well done videos on Youtube of Kiwis exploring the Coromandel mines. If they are still on Youtube you should be able to find them easily enough. I shot a few videos inside mines in the lower Coromandel some years back. Unfortunatley I only had poor lighting back then and the quality is very poor compared to the videos shot more recently in HD. One of mine ... www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPVA3fek-X8I can't find the others at present. If I can get a URL for them I'll then add them to this thread. Regards, Rob (RKC)

Awesome stuff Rob. Here is the Facebook group I've been viewing Victorian mineshaft exploration on: www.facebook.com/TheVictorianHistoricalMineChasers/Fascinating stuff all these old mines. Great to see all the photos as most of us will never be going into any of these ourselves. I wonder if anyone has been into the ones around here, Macetown, Skippers, and Invincible. Would be great to see a camera lowered down the Bendigo shafts too.

G'day simon, Thanks for the link! Interesting stuff. I had no idea any of this exploration of old mines was going on in Victoria. Most of the old mine shafts around Skippers and Macetown have collapsed. When exploring any old mines in New Zealand's South Island there is a potential problem to seriously consider that is of no concern in Victoria. Earthquakes can occur at any time and even one of the mild quakes that occur regularly (nearly daily) can dislodge a roof that has already be loosened by all the shaking since the mine was first dug. DoC has closed of most of the shafts at Bendigo ( smg.photobucket.com/user/NZGOLD/media/Underground%20mines/8b723a52-1.jpg.html?sort=3&o=84 ). There is a fascinating historical story about the Bendigo mines concerning a valiant attempt to put in a horizontal drive from the base of the hill at Bendigo to intercept the gold reefs lower down than the vertical shafts went originally. I'll see if I can find the complete story and post it here. After a lot of digging over many years, it failed. Many years back I found the entrance to the drive which was then not sealed off and it was big enough to drive a car into. I went back in again a few years later and could not find it. It might have been covered up. It was out of the declared historic area and in the sheep station, so the entrance could have been quietly bulldozed by the station owners or DoC. Modern miners attempting to open up an old shaft near Reefton (aka Quartzopolis ). ALL PHOTOS AND VIDEOS COPYRIGHT (RKC) Regards, Rob (RKC)
