G'day, James Shaw is a wankerThe delightful prospect of the country seeing the back of the Green Party after they fall below 5% on Saturday and depart the precincts of Parliament is given added importance by their continuing and rank hypocrisy.pc.blogspot.co.nz/2017/09/james-shaw-is-wanker.htmlRegards, Rob (RKC)

G'day, Industries fear effects of new Government's environmental stancewww.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/98689073/industries-fear-effects-of-new-governments-environmental-stanceSouth Island industries are urging the new Government to hear them out before finalising environmental policies they fear could cost the economy dearly.
... and no new mines on conservation land.
Chris Baker, chief executive of Straterra, which represents mining and mineral industries, said the ban on new mines on conservation land came "out of the blue".
"It wasn't part of the coalition agreements that we were aware of."
Baker said the policy "might not be as clear as it sounds" and they needed more time before commenting further.www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA1711/S00047/no-new-mines-on-conservation-land-signalled.htmwww.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11907764Labour would also "progressively restore" DoC funding and, like the Greens, ban any mining on Schedule 4 land, and place any bids to mine elsewhere under the discretion of the Conservation Minister.www.beehive.govt.nz/release/no-new-mines-conservation-land-signalledThe Minister of Conservation Eugenie Sage has today confirmed that the new Government will strengthen the protection for public conservation land by making it off-limits for new mining. The announcement was made as part of the Speech from the Throne given today at Parliament, which outlined the Government’s policy and legislative proposals. “Public conservation lands are set aside for nature to thrive and for New Zealanders and visitors to enjoy. Mining, especially open-cast mining runs counter to that. It destroys indigenous vegetation and habitats, permanently changes natural landscapes and can create sizeable waste rock dumps with a risk of acid mine drainage polluting waterways.Regards, Rob (RKC)

Any idea on what will happen to any prospecting / exploration permits on doc land will they get the chance to mine or is that only existing mining permits will be permitted , wonder how much longer the mining permits will get to run , presuming one can still extend a mining permit ?

G'day boaraxa,
Its far too early for anyone to know the details of the recently announced policy change. I'll keep adding to this thread as more becomes publicly known.
Obviously, of interest to dredgers, will be how waterways are effected. I can't imagine myself that waterways will become classified as "conservation estate".
The hostile-to-mining bureaucrats in NZP&Ms must be beside themselves with excitement by being gifted another tool to use to further their agenda of eliminating gold mining altogether in New Zealand.
The best miners could hope for in the short term would be for the coalition partners to start fighting over which policies to persue, that would occupy them until the next election (or an early election if there is any waka jumping). However I'm not holding my breath.
Realistically there is already a ban on mining on the conservation estate, as a defacto ban. The roadblocks that can, and have been used by the bureaucracy, were nearly as good as any outright ban. Now with the Greens in government its no longer necessary for government to keep up any pretence that there is a real Kiwi gold mining industry left, with any future.

G'day, Coal mine granted consent on conservation landCoal mine granted consent on conservation land Forest & Bird is warning that today’s decision to grant consent for an opencast coal mine on public land – some of it on New Zealand’s conservation estate – could push great spotted kiwi and other endangered species such as South Island fernbird and the West Coast green gecko closer to extinction.
The West Coast Regional Council and Buller District Council today granted resource consent for the approximately 150 hectare opencast Te Kuha coal mine, near Westport.www.scoop.co.nz/stories/AK1711/S00552/coal-mine-granted-consent-on-conservation-land.htmBuller mayor hopes change of Government won't stop planned open-cast coal mine"It is still in the hands of Government at this present stage. I'm very much aware that the last government had all but signed off the access agreement so I'm hoping that this won't be impeded by the the change of government."www.stuff.co.nz/business/99103375/buller-mayor-hopes-change-of-government-wont-stop-planned-opencast-coal-mineRegards, Rob (RKC)
