Geez, Matt, I thought you cold-climate dredgers escaped bities like mossies and sandflies. Rob can probably relate to the March flies that nipped you on the Goulburn. Worst was a smaller fly that waited till you took off your jacket and snorkled on the surface. He/she/it bided their time till you were busy working, then bit you between the shoulder-blades. They let you get started again and came back for seconds. ;D

G'day, The near lethal March flies on Big river are one of the few things about dredging in Victoria I would have rather not been reminded about . In Otago the sandflies can be a problem when sniping as they are easily breathed in through the snorkle. Most Kiwi snipers cover the snorkle intake with fine mesh, like the insect proof mesh thats put on windows. Regards, Rob (RKC)

Yair, we do the snorkel/mesh thing here too, but it`s to stop your 'mate' dropping a dead prawn or lizard down your snorkel.

;D We have found the best way to keep away from the March flies is to stay under water! They kind of disappear around evening when your cleaning up your cons, the mosquitoes arrive then. If anyone ever gets up to Northern Canada or Alaska you will know all about mosquitoes.
