G'day Tony ( groundhog ),
That is very disapointing news.
When L and M were claiming areas back in the 90s they started to exclude the waterways from the permit area (they did it first on a Mining Permit area up in the Nevis) and its a shame none of the other companies did the same so it would have become standard practice by now. Waterways are of no use to a large mining company and therefore of no real interest. The only possible solution I can think of would be for the government to specify by leglisation that waterways be excluded from a large mining companies permit area. But that would mean they would have to acknowledge the small scale miners ... for the first time ever.
Well ... if all the large mining companies are now refusing to allow small Mining Permits in areas where they have blanketed the ground, then all Kiwi miners, from the guy with a small dredge to the larger companies using trommel plants, are being excluded from their own country by companies from other countries. And I can't see a change of government at the weekend will improve the situation at all. Kiwi small scale miners are getting it from everywhere ... from the Greenies, to Regional Councils enforcing the RMA, to overseas mining companies and just about everyone else.
The dredgers who already have current granted Mining Permits (claims) must have it made ... just a pity I'm not one of them and did not get a claim a few years ago while the going was good. We finally have a gold price thats high enough, but now can't get legal title to the ground.
Regards,
